We're a broker, not a carrier, which means we sit on your side of the table. We read the policy language closely, we know what the benefits actually pay, and we price against your real roster instead of a generic rate. When we can negotiate a better rate for our clients, we pass it through rather than keeping the difference.
Most of the value shows up after something goes wrong — a claim mid-season, bills arriving, a family asking questions nobody prepared for. Knowing the provisions cold is what makes that stretch manageable, and it's the part of this work we take most seriously.
Monique Palmieri-Wilson, Founder
My father, Bill Hooper, founded Student Insurance in the 1960s. I first worked for him from 1995 to 1997 — young, and mostly learning how much I didn't know. I earned my California insurance license in 1997, spent a few years with a general brokerage, and in 2000 joined American Fidelity Assurance, working with public employees on Section 125 programs and ancillary coverage like disability, cancer, and life.
In 2002 Bill and I agreed it was time for me to come back. I returned to Student Insurance as Executive Vice President, working directly under him, and stayed fourteen years. He taught me the business from the inside: how to read policy language, how to price real risk, and above all that this industry runs on relationships — honesty, accountability, and showing up for clients whether or not anything has gone wrong.
I spent the years after in senior roles elsewhere in student and public-entity insurance, and in 2023 I opened Granite Student Insurance Services to do the work my own way. We assess special risks for underwriting and build programs around what a client actually needs, because a one-size plan rarely fits anyone well. We stay involved through claims, reviewing administrators for fit and compliance, and analyzing claims as they come rather than at renewal. That's what Bill would have cared about most, and it's what I care about most: being useful after something has gone wrong, not just at the point of sale.
